Preparing Your Home for Postpartum: The Realistic Essentials

Preparing Your Home for Postpartum: The Realistic Essentials

The countdown is on! As I prepare for the arrival of my second baby (and get everything ready for the MABEL MAMA launch!), I’ve been thinking a lot about how to set up the house.

Whether you are a first-time parent or, like me, doing this for the second time, the goal is the same: creating a sanctuary where you can recover and bond. Here is how I’m prepping my home for the postpartum weeks, room by room.

The Key Areas

When you bring a newborn home, your world becomes very small—usually centered around a few key areas. I like to focus on the Living Room and the Primary Bedroom as the main hubs.

Now every home is different, this Layout describes my flat the best, so here are my Key Areas and what I am not disturbing or putting off for later:

The Bedroom: Your Recovery Zone

Since you’ll be spending a significant amount of time here during the first few weeks, it needs to be tidy and functional. My bedroom essentials include:

A safe sleep space
: A crib or bassinet for the baby.
This is obviously an individual choice, for us we opted for a Bassinet with Wheels that can open on my side of the Bed.

We all still sleep on the Masterbed so we were co sleeping this whole time, except for the occasional Nap in her own bed or on the couch.

The "Essentials Cart": I highly recommend a rolling trolley (the "Essentials Caddy") to keep everything within arm's reach.
This has been my Trolley during the first Postpartum Journey - it has held up it's shape and nothing is falling off after nearly 4 Years of use so I definitely can recommend it.

The Living Room: Space to Breathe

Here I'm not changing much, I'm mostly cleaning the couch and placing a Play Mat that I'm patchworking from all the old babyclothes that I still have.

There will be another Blogpost here showcasing it.

I'll also have a fullbody Pillow permenantly placed in the living room that serves as a nursing Pillow and as a cosy nest for the Baby.

If your crib has wheels and can move between rooms, than you probably won't need another sleeping space for the baby in the livingroom.

Respecting the Big Sister’s Space

One thing that is incredibly important to me this time around is my first child’s room. That is her safe space. She doesn’t have to share it until she is ready. I’m not removing or adding anything to her room; it stays exactly as it is to ensure she feels secure amidst all the changes, and has a space she can retract to when she needs.

The Service Areas: Kitchen & Bath

In the Bathroom

Luckily, I still have the baby tub from my first, so no need to buy new!

But if you are searching- this Bathtub is the same Brand as our one but slightly better.

In the Kitchen
My plan is to breastfeed just like the first time around. For the first six months, I don't need much for the baby—the focus is actually on feeding me and the rest of the family!

- The Freezer: I’m currently decluttering and disinfecting the freezer to make room for meal prep.

I have a few foolproof recipes that I will cook in batches. stay tuned for the Blogpost on the recipes and my Process.

- Pumping Prep: I am getting a new breast pump and a stock of freezer bags for when I need or want to pump.

I managed to pump last time, but the baby decided otherwise, she refused every kind of bottle and pacifiers. So very fast I got rid of my electric one and I pumped again when I got back to work with a manual Breast pump- more for selfrelief than to feed her ( she was already one year old).

So this Time I'm getting a manual breastpump to test how my baby reacts to bottles and being fed by someone else before investing in an electric pump.

This Brand is really good - especially the nipple cream, it saved me more times than I can count. I'm Getting the Pump, the Storage Bags and the cream.

So the plan is to breastfeed just like the first time around. So the really focus is actually on feeding me and the rest of the family!
