I made this dress when I was nine months pregnant.
When my son was born, he couldn’t breathe properly, so he had to be rushed to the emergency children’s hospital. I followed him there, wearing this exact floor-length dress.
I spent the night in front of the emergency ward, waiting for them to let me in. When they finally did, they gave me a pump so I could get some 'golden milk' to feed him via a tube. Afterward, the nurses gently told me I should go try to rest—they said I could stay if I wanted, but he couldn't be held, and I needed to pump again in two hours. Feeling entirely helpless, I stepped out. I couldn't bear to just sit there watching him when I couldn't even hold him in my arms. I needed to breathe.
It was 5:00 AM, and the day was just breaking. I walked until I found a small patch of woods behind the hospital. I kicked off my shoes and stepped into the trees.
Suddenly, I heard a gasp from behind me.
I turned around. It was a little girl with her mom, looking just as tired as I felt. The little girl had big, round, sparkling eyes. She looked at the bare back and the long, sweeping hem of my dress in the early morning light, and the moment our eyes locked, she asked:
'Are you a fairy?'
I couldn’t help but smile. Her mom smiled, too, and said, 'We didn’t expect to see anyone out here.'
'Me neither,' I replied. 'I came here to escape.'
But in that exact moment, as the sun began to rise, I found myself again. I saw a spark of wonder in that little girl’s eyes, despite her being so clearly, deeply sick. And suddenly, I reconnected with my purpose. The simple sight of me in this dress gave both of them a little bit of magic in their day, and it gave me the strength to walk back inside, be fully present for my newborn, and face the next two hours.
My mission is to help mothers and bring a little magic into their children's lives every day. Because clothes? Clothes are just a tool
